Significance of output:

In recognition for this work Prof Scanlan was awarded the Rolls-Royce R&T Directors award for creativity in 2009. The work led to a shift in the ability to generate cost information early in the design process. Constructing a cost model of a £10M gas turbine used to take several weeks. Using this research it now takes less than 2 days and is more accurate. Rolls-Royce has now adopted this approach in the UK, USA and Germany. Work associated with this paper is now the subject of two full international patent applications by RR (one now granted RR ref 4278).
