English abstract
This article interrogates the post-unification prose writing of Christa Wolf. In contrast to most post-unification Wolf criticism, which has associated a shift in the author’s writing towards the uncanny and the spectral with the collapse of communism, this research demonstrates that moments of the uncanny in this author’s work must actually be associated with developments in East Germany from the mid-1960s. They signal the author’s disquiet with communism and her growing self-alienation and lack of orientation as a politically committed author and intellectual.
