Double-weighted statement

This book breaks new ground in the historiography of the Cold War by showing how the Soviets tried to reverse their declining global fortunes in the 1980s by engaging with Asia, and why their vision for a Soviet-led Asia failed. It is based on research in at least a dozen languages in often hard-to-access archives and private collections in Russia, China, and elsewhere in Asia and the world, and on interviews with policymakers, including several presidents and prime ministers. Weaving diverse Asian narratives into one story informed by a novel interpretative framework required nearly a decade of research and writing.
