Light Logic: a one person exhibition at the Site Gallery, Sheffield, UK

This exhibition showed the recent innovative work of Edmonds in the context of its history. The recent innovations were displayed in the Shaping Form works and the Shaping Space installation, supported by the Henry Moore Foundation. The preparation for the exhibition and catalogue was supported by a ‘Grants for Artists’ award from the Arts Council of England. The key innovation is that the generative process is slowly evolved over time as a result of audience movement. Rather than being interactive in the simple ‘game’ sense, they represent one system influencing another over a lifetime. The Shaping Form (and Shaping Space) time-based series consists of unique abstract interactive artwork that are each generating colours and forms in time from a set of unique rules. They also take data from a camera and continuously calculate the amount of activity seen in front of the work. The computer software then steadily modifies the rules. The artwork and its development over time is, then, influenced by the people who look at it. The audience help to shape the work. Shaping Form is a representation of computed life, moving and changing of its own accord but maturing and developing as a result of the movement of audiences. Light Logic was a retrospective show that attracted an item on Radio 4’s Front Row, a listing as an exhibition of the week in the Guardian and positive reviews. The show toured to Australia, where a version was exhibited at Conny Dietzchold Gallery, Sydney in June/July 2013. A Shaping Form was also shown in Selected New Acquisitions. Victoria and Albert Museum, London (April 2012-April 2013). One of the works, ColourNet, was shown in Paris atf the CHI2013 conference, April 2013. The evaluation of Light Logic was presented at IDEA2013. CAS/CADE2013 and, as a keynote, at Affective Experiences, London.
