Additional information

<27>This paper applies information theoretic techniques to detect weak scattering signals in highly cluttered environments, with application to medical diagnosis of tumours using ultra-wideband signals. The novelty of the suggested approach is evidenced by its publication in a top biomedical journal despite the lack of any clinical results. A book which reviews this and other relevant techniques by the authors has been accepted for publication by the Springer Brief Series in 2014.
