Double-weighted statement

This is a large-scale, extremely detailed study of a topic never previously investigated, based on more than ten years’ research in Russian archives. Each of the book’s five chapters would, if taken separately, stand as major pieces of original research. The approach is multi-disciplinary, synthesizing labour history, urban history, and the history of health and medicine. Each topic is analysed along two comparative axes: a detailed comparison of the different regions within the Soviet Union, and a comparison of the Soviet experience in general with that of other countries at comparable stages of economic and infrastructure development.
