Additional information

The novel calcium-permeable ion channel identified in this work may underlie the electrical and metabolic insults which produce lens cataract. This ion channel is therefore an attractive target for anti-cataract therapies, while its constitutive activity in the lens is likely to be crucial to its hydration and metabolic homeostasis. Data has been integrated into a finite element model of the ocular lens, under the international Physiome project. (p.hunter@auckland.ac.nz)
