Linear stability of Hunt’s flow
This paper presents research resulting from an investigation of buoyant flow stability funded by the Leverhulme Trust (£74,013, F00732/F). The research included the first fundamental study of the linear stability of magnetohydrodynamic duct flows present in tokamak blankets and semiconductor crystal growth. Since standard numerical techniques are not suitable for such complex flows, a unique collocation method was developed, validated and successfully applied. To expand findings beyond linear stability theory, a CASE Studentship (£92,000 over 3.5 years) for a study of turbulent Hunt flow, was obtained from the EPSRC/Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (Dr Tim Hender, Fusion Programme Manager, tim.hender@ccfe.ac.uk).
