Building on narrative methodologies developed in Hollis' 'Secret Lives of Buildings' (2009), this paper builds on ‘La Filosofia D’Arredamento’ (Praz 1947) and ‘The Art of Memory’ (Yates 1967), to re-imagine interior historiography as the story of ephemeral meetings and events; the traces they leave behind them; and ultimately the story of the art of memory itself.

This paper was presented as a paper at the conference of the Modern Interiors Research Centre, Kingston in 2010 and in much expanded form, it forms the basis for a book, The Memory palace: a Book of Lost Interiors to be published 2013.
