This monograph is just over 100,000 words long, and therefore the

equivalent of about 9-10 journal articles. The research that went into

it was conducted over a period of about five years, and included

hundreds of oral history interviews. Such interviews are laborious to

get (involving travel in rural Africa), to process (they need to be

transcribed and typed), and to interpret (both local idiosyncrasies of

Swahili, the language in which the interviews were conducted, and the personal agendas of respondents need to be examined).
