Lewis Edwards
This volume is a critical biography of Lewis Edwards (1809-87), Calvinistic Methodist theologian and leading intellectual in nineteenth century Wales. It describes his family background in the context of the secession of the Welsh Calvinistic Methodists from the Anglican Church in 1811, his education in the universities of London and Edinburgh, his work in establishing the Bala College in 1837, and the impact of the Traethodydd (‘The Essayist’), the first substantial intellectual quarterly from 1845 onwards. Edwards’ theological contribution is assessed including his works on ecclesiology, theological method and the doctrine of the atonement. The volume concludes by assessing Edwards’ legacy and the subsequent development of theology in Wales.
