Process yield improvement through optimum design of fixture layouts in 3D multistation assembly systems
A key challenge for multi-station assembly system development is optimization of the whole system instead of individual stations/fixtures as is current practice. Also, there is a lack of production yield assessment of optimized solutions. This paper developed the first methodology for multi-station assembly system optimization with process yield improvement. It is part of the Stream-of-Variation industrial demonstrator used by DCS Inc., USA (djohnson@3dcs.com). Application of the methodology led to first time discovery of unacceptable production yield and ill-conditioned system design phenomena by a major automotive manufacturer. Paper is Top-2 most cited among all 594 papers published in the journal 2008-2013.
