A History of the Japanese Language

This monograph of 140,000 words makes contributions to the history of the Japanese language in all of its main areas and periods. It covers a wide range of the sub-disciplines of linguistics and a long time span. The research on which the book is based involved use of substantial amounts of textual and database materials, much of which was only conveniently available in Japan. More than a year (cumulatively) was spent on research in Japan. The project required ten years to complete, and involved a total of two years of sabbatical and research leave.
