Duncan undertook a central aspect of the empirical research in this article i.e. a survey of journalists’ perceptions of the ‘death knock’, a type of interview that journalists carry out with a bereaved family after a sudden, newsworthy death. She conducted a survey of 126 journalists working in the Scottish press, 53 of whom completed a 38-question survey on their experience, attitudes and preparedness of this form of reporting. She also interviewed 14 former students currently working as journalists to provide further qualitative data to enrich the outcomes of the survey.
