English abstract

This article offers a re-reading of Frederick II of Prussia's historical writings as expressions of the king's understanding of history and his sense of temporality. Frederick rejected the paradigm earlier established by Pufendorf, according to whom the conflict between the central executive and holders of provincial power had been central to the emergence of the state as an effective actor. The article explores the reasons for this bracketing out of domestic conflict, reflects on the resultant logical aporia in the king's historical thinking and suggests reasons for this distinctive feature of his writings.
