This paper provides engineers with a practical, safe and accurate design method for stainless steel compression members, taking into account overall, local and distortional failure modes. The design method is based on the Direct Strength Method, but is modified and adapted to stainless steel. It provides a rational, simple alternative to the existing effective width based design.
