Centrifuge modelling of soil slopes reinforced with vegetation
Mechanical reinforcement of soil slopes by vegetation is well-recognised but very difficult to quantify in situ as it is normally impractical to investigate root mechanical reinforcement of slopes at failure. This work formed part of an EPSRC-funded study (GR/S43962/01) between Dundee University and the Scottish Crop Research Institute. For the first time, a vegetated model slope was brought to failure within a geotechnical centrifuge, enabling root-reinforcement to be evaluated in a closely monitored experimental situation. This research contributed to a Keynote paper invitation at 3rd International Symposium on the Use of Vegetation for Slope Stabilisation, Vancouver (2012).
