Additional information

This paper presented, for the first time, a new mechanism of pile foundation failure by excessive settlement in liquefiable soils and, also, the corresponding axial load transfer within the foundation. The work was subsequently utilised in Chapter 3 of the book ‘Design of Pile Foundations in Liquefiable Soils’ (http://www.worldscientific.com/worldscibooks/10.1142/p628) published by Imperial College Press, a second edition of which has recently been commissioned. The work led directly to Dr Knappett giving an invited lecture on the topic at the 4th International Conference on Urban Earthquake Engineering in Tokyo (2009).
