Additional information

This paper describes the first step in creating an electrically switchable camouflage (invisibility cloak) for potential use in military and civil applications. In a novel approach, by coating gold nanoparticles with appropriate liquid-crystal ligands, a metamaterial is created with an anisotropic superlattice, which, for the first time, is highly dichroic. Such behaviour is required to allow electrical reorientation and switching between positive (visible) and negative (invisible) refractive index.
