This international collaboration used both molecular dynamics and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to investigate the absorption of polysaccharides known to promote formation of vicinal calcite faces in Emiliania huxleyi. We showed how different polysaccharides control crystal morphology and thus gave new insight into the biomineralization process (doi:10.1016/j.ecoleng.2009.01.003). Results were presented in three international invited talks (including 2008 Gordon Conference) and were essential background for the programme grant (EP/I001514/1, £5.35M ) led by Harding.
