Additional information

Boron and silicon containing coatings offer significant potential for high temperature applications, but the achievement of required morphology, phase and grain size (and therefore mechanical and thermal properties) is difficult. This international collaboration revealed how advanced metal boride/silicide coatings could be tailored using a pulse bias Physical Vapour Deposition system; laying the foundations to deposit a wide range of multi-component materials. A patent was filed for a new pulse bias system resulting from the work (GB 2459103/WO2009125189). This process innovation is being exploited in a recently awarded 2.5M Euro ERC Advanced Grant.
