Additional information

The use of titanium in moving parts in aircraft, transport and biomedical applications has until now been prevented by high friction and wear. We report a novel duplex treatment, combining diffusion treatments with Physical Vapour Deposition of coatings to reduce wear. This allows, for the first time, surface engineering of Ti-alloys without compromising bulk strength or, uniquely, fatigue behaviour. The work was performed under Technology Programme Project TP/22076, with the results validated by the commercial partners (Tecvac Ltd. (Jonathan.Housden@tecvac.com), NMB-Minebea Ltd), which resulted in direct commercial application of duplex coated Ti bearings in aircraft landing gear by Airbus.
