Double-weighted statement

This 118000 word book draws on extensive archival research carried out in Russian archives that had hitherto not been studied. The research was carried out over several visits to St Petersburg, in an archive that is open for only restricted hours. The book also draws on 27 interviews carried out in St Petersburg. The latter half of the book consists of close readings of poets who, apart from Brodsky, have received almost no critical attention previously. Work on these chapters involved significant further research, in archives, and through interviews and correspondence.
