Additional information

This article includes about 150 examples, numbered or in the text. 58 are from my “Variability in Spoken French”, submitted for RAE 1996. Discussion of these 58 examples here is rationalised and forms part of a different overall structure: an overview of the grammar, rather than a variationist study of a corpus. Relevant linguistic constraints are presented here as formulae. This article, due to appear also in the on-line "Encyclopédie grammaticale du français", follows a template established by the project leaders. Footnotes 1 and 2 belong to a presentation of EGF by Dominique Willems, placed immediately beforehand.
