Additional information

There is increasing interest in the use of cosmic ray muons for tomographic study of large structures, both natural and engineered. This allows non-invasive characterisation of systems without the radiation problems produced by X-Rays and can be used for structures too large for X-Rays to penetrate. Examples include the detection of radioactive contraband dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.nima.2011.01.163; and investigating geological structures for carbon dioxide sequestration dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.ijggc.2012.07.023. In order to plan and interpret such measurements a precise knowledge of the cosmic ray muon flux is required and this paper presents the most precise measurements to date.
