Additional information

Using results from an EPSRC grant (EP/D078350/1), supported by SMAC Ltd and BAE Systems (p.d.hubbard3@lboro.ac.uk), this paper reports on an innovative approach to a fault tolerant actuation system for safety critical applications in aerospace, nuclear fuel handling and high speed railways. The approach responds to real needs for precision faced with increasingly complex demands on control systems and operating conditions. By removing the health monitoring and reconfiguration progress functions of traditional fault tolerant systems, this high redundancy method improves efficiency and reliability with fault tolerance.
