Additional information

Autofrettage is a strengthening treatment applied to components containing bored holes. When the ring of material surrounding the hole has been pre-loaded beyond its yield point this material remains in residual compression. The latter is advantageous in practice serving to lessen the tension arising from the loading of cylinders, discs and lugs. Most notably, fatigue resistance is enhanced under an applied cyclic loading. Experimental strain gauge data for swaging aluminium alloy discs and lugs with an oversized tapered plug are given. These data substantiate an accompanying theory of swaging using either a plug or a sphere as the expanding tool.
