Additional information

For the first time, the changes in properties of deposited DLC by the addition of argon gas into the plasma have been investigated at Brunel. Argon gas results in an increase of the SP2 cluster size which increases with increasing dilution of the acetylene by argon. This research has shown that the properties of the DLC coating can then be tailored for various applications which have a great potential for formulating surfaces with desirable attributes such as the avoidance of blood clots on implanted devises such as coronary stents or to attract beneficial cells to implants such as hip prostheses.
