Additional information

This highly cited paper was the culmination of two Research Council grants (GR/R03143/01, BBD524583/1). A new small footprint 18-litre coil planet centrifuge was developed using a new “silent” belt drive system and on-column cooling system. Linear scale-up was demonstrated. This unit became the benchmark for industrial purification runs of kilogram quantities of pure drug for clinical trials. A number of successful applications have been performed in confidence for industry. The only one that allowed publication demonstrated a three-fold reduction in cost and solvent usage when compared to competitive solid phase chromatography (DeAmicis et al, J. Chromatogr. A, 1218 (2011) 6122)
