Measurements of inclusive W and Z cross sections in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV
A key test of the engineering design of the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter, to which I have contributed with STFC support (PP/E000479/1, ST/K001639/1) since 1995, is the measurement of particles already dicovered. This paper demonstrates that CMS can accurately reconstruct (electron energies to 3%, tracking impact position to 15 micrometres, momenta better than 1%) two of the fundamental force-carriers. It verifies that a world-leading high-energy electron and photon detector system was designed, built and operated which led directly to the discovery of the Higgs boson. I was a member of a small group of CMS experts that critically reviewed this paper.
