Additional information

The research work in this paper was presented at the International Water Association (IWA) 11th Aachen Membrane Colloquium held on 28–29 March, 2007 at Eurogress in Aachen, Germany, and by which route it was accepted for publication. This conference is a bi-annual event organised by RWTH Aachen University. This paper was the first of its type to suggest to an international audience the idea of using a fully integrated predictive model of an activated sludge model (ASM) system which included the unbound EPS (extracellular polymeric substance) terms coupled to a good membrane filtration model for system control and optimisation.
