Additional information

This work was the result of TSB-funded research on smart cutting tools (Contract No. BD266E) in collaboration with Renishaw plc. In this research, diamond-like carbon (DLC) films are deposited on a Ø500 µm diameter tungsten carbide micro-end mill by the plasma-enhanced CVD process. Coating characterization is undertaken and the DLC coating found in good coverage on the tool. Cutting trials using the coated tool are undertaken in both dry and wet conditions, and illustrate that the innovation can reduce cutting forces, tool wear, surface roughness and micro-burr formation. A patent has arisen as a result of this research (WO2013/1313279, 2013).
