Performance and operation of the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter
This paper reports on the operation and performance, evaluated using cosmic-ray muons, of a large electromagnetic calorimeter in the international experiment at CERN, CMS. The calorimeter is made of 75848 lead tungstate crystals and the status of the detector channels is reported. The stability of crucial operational parameters, high voltage, temperature and electronic noise, is summarized. One critical component, the vacuum phototriode, was prototyped at Brunel and over 2000 production devices tested here at 4T field. This work was funded by an STFC grant and has led to further STFC support (ST/K001639/1) and an EPSRC “First Grant” (EP/H042717/1) for Leslie.
