Additional information

This paper formed part of the output of the EC-funded RELIEF project (EVG1-CT-2002-00069), particularly work-package 2, Palaeoseismology. Collaboration was with INGV, Italy and ITU, Turkey. Dr Collins’ input included radiometric dating (210PB and 14C), geomorphology and geotechnics/sedimentology. The findings from the work have been used in earthquake risk analysis in Turkey, including improved understanding of recurrence intervals, as well as more fundamental geological research. The paper has helped refine a methodology that is applicable in similar setting in other parts of the world. The journal’s impact factor is 3.174.
