A systematic review of evaluation of variability management approaches in software product lines
<09> The first ever systematic analysis of a large number of Variability Management (VM) approaches in Software Product Lines (SPL), regarding the types and strength of the evidence provided to support the claims made. The paper highlights the lack or low quality of empirical evidence for a large number of VM approaches. Indeed, even highly cited VM approaches were shown to have little or no supporting empirical evidence. Hence, the paper illustrates a research gap in the SPL research community; this gap was recognized and a Special Issue of the Empirical Software Engineering Journal was proposed to fill the gap.
