Here we applied a finite element computational model of the pulmonary circulation to gain an understanding of perfusion measurements made via Arterial Spin Labelled Magnetic Resonance Imaging (ASL MRI). The model enabled quantification of the MRI signal in the arteries, veins and capillaries.

This work provided an ideal application of computational models. The model was used to answer questions about the imaging modality that could not be answered in any other way. An optimised filtering technique was proposed by the model and is currently being applied for actual ASL MRI measurements being made at the University of California, San Diego.
