The first overall study and classification of a new class of cryptographic protocols, mainly used for ad-hoc authentication. It introduces many new protocols as well as analysing existing ones. A protocol introduced here has been adopted in international standard ISO/IE-9798-6: 2nd edition 2010. This is the central paper in a series by the authors introducing the structure of these protocols and related cryptography (e.g. “Short-output universal hash functions and their use in fast and secure message authentication", FSE 2012). This technology was developed into a communication platform for MOD and the mobile payment spin-out OxCEPT under development by ISIS Innovation.
