The work is an entirely new approach to powder snow avalanche dynamics, making a direct link between large-scale vortex structures in an avalanche head, which provide a mechanism for massive snow entrainment, and the avalanche speed, depth and impact pressures. The mechanism described also provides new insight to volcanic pyroclastic flow phenomena and to submarine turbidity current dynamics.
