Double-weighted statement

The volume consists of a 62-page Introduction, 87pp. of interpretative essays on the five odes under discussion, 38pp. containing a text, and translation (based on a first draft by J. G. Howie), and a 135-page commentary. Research on the Bacchylidean text, Bacchylidean poetry, its contexts, and its interpretation since the publication of Kenyon's editio princeps in 1998 occupied (in the main) the years 1997-2008. The research involved a detailed knowledge of a considerable body of primary sources and the critical engagement with a large body of corresponding secondary literature.
