MR to ultrasound registration for image-guided prostate interventions.
<23> This paper, published in the top journal in the field, overcomes major outstanding problems of tissue motion and poor ultrasound image quality to demonstrate accurate, automatic, non-rigid registration of 3D ultrasound and MR images of the prostate for guiding surgical procedures. The solution combines statistical and finite element modelling techniques with a novel method for registering geometric organ models directly to medical images. Software based on this technology has been used in over 150 prostate cancer procedures at UCLH, and is being integrated within the widely-used Slicer software platform with Harvard and a commercial therapy system with Sonacare Medical.
