Breakdown processes in gas micro-bubbles in liquids under electric stress
This research, collaborative with the Russian Academy of Sciences [Dr Vladimir Atrazhev, atrazhev@yandex.ru] and supported by the Royal Society [£11k, 2007-2009], analyses breakdown mechanisms in gas-filled micro-bubbles formed under high-voltage stress in insulating liquids (mineral oils, ester fluids). The results of this research can be used in breakdown voltage calculations, in analysis of pre-breakdown transient processes and will help in the development of advanced health and condition monitoring systems for liquid-insulated high-voltage equipment. The research has applications in electrical and pulsed-power industries, and is currently supported through research collaborations with Sandia National Laboratories (USA) [£28.8k, 2012-2014, Jane Lehr, jmlehr@unm.edu].
