English abstract

The chapter deals with the memory of the First World War in Germany focusing on the question to what extent the war experience changed the political outlook in Germany. It compares popular attitudes and ideological orientations towards war in the German Empire with those in the interwar period (including the mood of the German population when Germany unleashed a new war in 1939) to show that the dominant nationalist memorialisation of the war led to a continuation of militaristic attitudes not only among large parts of the elites, but also within the population.
