Additional information

Develops a new robust methodology for calculation and critical assessment of the industry-standard Power Usage Effectiveness Metric and identifies limitations of current methods for quantifying data centre energy efficiency. Applying the analysis to Facebook’s open compute project indicates the possibility of using opensource data to verify industrial claims about data centre energy efficiency. Research led directly to the Uptime Institute Green Enterprise IT Award 2013 for Facility Product Development with Iceotope (Peter.Hopton@icetope.com) and several academic and industrial collaborations in energy efficient cooling who, with authors as co-investigators, secured a €1.7 million Regions of Knowledge EU grant (ref. 320013).
