Delivered through a prestigious NIH Bioengineering Research Partnership (R01 AR052653-01 Uni/Iowa, USA, Leeds and Orthzentrum, Munich, £2.5M, 2006-11, RMH local PI). Describes, for the first time, the effect of input kinetics on the wear in total disc replacement within a unique design of simulator developed at Leeds. Concepts within this paper led to the successful bid for an EU FP7 NMP grant (LifeLongJoints – 238690, €13.32M, 20013-18 - RMH Coordinator/PI – 5 leading EU Universities (including ETH Zurich, Uppsala) and 7 commercial/healthcare organisations) to investigate novel coatings in total joint replacement with an emphasis on population based assessment of implants
