Additional information

This fundamental work in collaboration with Sheffield University (Rainforth M.Rainforth@sheffield.ac.uk) analysed the microstructure of explanted prostheses, characterizing the evolution of abnormal stripe wear patterns observed clinically. The work was presented at the Orthopaedic Research Society(San Diego, 2010) and has led to further publications (doi: 10.1002/jbm.b.3192, doi:10.1016/j.actamat.2012.01.009). The research was part of the Leeds Musculoskeletal Biomedical Research Unit (lmbru.ac.uk) and contributed to the successful £6.6M refunding of this BRU by the NiHR. The results have provided important evidence for users moving from Biolox Forte alumina to Biolox Delta composites clinically (http://www.ceramtec.com/ceramic alumina ceramic -materials/biolox/delta/ , (Robert Streicher, R.Streicher@ceramtec.de).
