NTFS Permissions Explorer
<18>Administrating and monitoring New Technology File System (NTFS) permissions can be a cumbersome and convoluted task. In today’s data rich world there has never been a more important time to ensure that data is secured against unwanted access. We have created a novel, and highly sought after, software artefact that allows NTFS permissions to be explored in an efficient, informative and intuitive way. Consideration has been taken from design to implementation to make the examination of special permissions, permission accumulation and inheritance easier for the user without any loss of clarity. The software is based on research described in the paper "A Novel Software Tool for Analysing NT® File System Permissions" published in the International Journal of Advanced Computer Science and Applications. This article identifies the essential and fundamental requirements of access control, highlighting the main causes of their misconfiguration within the NTFS. In the first year that the software has been made freely available it has been downloaded and installed by over five thousand users (from 60 different countries worldwide); see (http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/9743/) and (http://download.cnet.com/NTFS-Permissions-Explorer-SnapIn/3000-2094_4-75325639.html) for download statistics and details.
