‘Dr. G.s stürmische Übertragungsneurose. Über Gebrauch und Mißbrauch der Abstinenz’
The paper is a reflection on two principal themes in a newly discovered and published diary of a young doctor’s analysis with Freud in 1921: the development of a ‘transference-neurosis’ and the part played by the analyst’s request for ‘abstinence’. The paper also compares Freud’s ‘actual’ practices as recorded in the diary with various theoretical and practical notions introduced in his work on dreams and the conduct of the treatment. Finally, the doctor’s record of her analysis with Freud is compared with a previously unnoticed thinly disguised account of Freud’s analysis of three dreams of Alix Strachey’s, also from 1921.
