Demonstrates the counter-intuitive result that air encapsulating a sphere can increase terminal velocity. Key output from EPSRC project (EP/043097/1); one of only four invited projects under the UK Sport-EPSRC Olympics Initiative. A follow-on project was funded by UK Sport and led to an EPSRC project on drag reduction with Southampton University (EP/G057265/1 and EP/G058318/1). Led to model of plastron induced drag reduction in Soft Matter (vol. 7, 10100-10107, 2011) in collaboration with University of Alberta (Canada) and Journal of Fluid Mechanics (vol. 727 488-508 2013 chosen to be featured in 'Focus on Fluids').
