Minority language non-use in service settings: what we know, how we know it and what we might not know
Health and social care contexts and the issue of diglossia within a language are explored in depth. Whilst existing research on Welsh as a minority language have referred to diglossia between the English and Welsh language, the issue of diglossia in relation to, and amongst speakers of, a single language (Welsh) has been largely ignored. Here, again using a discourse analytic approach, the authors debate the presence and effects of diglossia between speakers of the same language. In the paper, which asks searching questions about existing research into language use in service settings in Wales, the authors argue the Welsh context might best be described as triglossic. Thus an innovative theoretical framework is proposed for understanding linguistic relations in Wales.
