Remote control of cellular behaviour with magnetic nanoparticles.
This paper describes the physical principles of nanomagnetic actuation of cell surface receptors. I developed the theoretical framework in 1995 and, with Prof. Alicia El Haj, have worked on its implementation for tissue engineering. This work has generated patents and a spin-off company, MICA BioSystems (www.micabiosystems.com). This paper provides a more specific follow-on to our 2003 review on the physical principles of biomedical applications of magnetic nanoparticles, which is the most highly cited paper in the field of magnetic nanoparticles, with >2,000 citations. This work was funded by The EPSRC (GR/R22247/01), Wellcome Trust (067743/Z/02/Z) & BBSRC (BBS/B/14515).
